Ladies, Ladies, Ladies! Welcome to EmpowerHER Essence!
Our Women in Business Spotlight series on the She is HER blog is all about celebrating women entrepreneurs who have transformed their passions into thriving businesses. In each feature, we highlight their resilience, balance, and personal growth along the way.
Recently, we had the privilege of interviewing Whitney Grayson, a true force who took her passion for cosmetology and transformed lives in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Grab your wine, coffee, or tea, and let’s dive into her incredible journey!
Juggling It All
When Whitney began her journey, she was juggling many roles…fiancée turned wife, college student, mom of three, and adjusting to a big family move to Houston from Kansas City. Transitioning from a fast-paced lifestyle to being a stay-at-home mom would be overwhelming for anyone, especially for a go-getter like Whitney who thrived on the hustle.
But despite the challenges, Whitney embraced each role, recognizing them as vital parts of her story. However, she soon realized that it was time to focus on herself and contribute more. That’s when her entrepreneurial drive kicked into high gear.
Gulf Coast Barber College: Beyond Cosmetology
Though Whitney had a strong foundation in cosmetology, she felt called to do more. The opportunity to attend barber school presented itself, and after graduating, she discovered her true passion, Teaching. With a background in education, Whitney felt it was no coincidence that she was drawn to the educational side of barbering. This passion ignited her vision for what would become Gulf Coast Barber College.
Barbering with Purpose: Helping Students Find Their 'Why'
Whitney’s mission at Gulf Coast Barber College goes beyond teaching the craft and skills of barbering. She’s dedicated to understanding her students, their stories, their struggles, and their motivations. For many of them, barbering was more than a profession; it was a way to survive.
Her college became a lifeline, helping students create opportunities for themselves and their families. Whitney found extreme joy in mentoring her students, helping them pass their exams, getting licensed, and ultimately, build thriving careers. Seeing them return with gratitude and success stories…some even opening their own shops, is what fuels her passion to keep going.
Expansion Mode & Family Legacy
Gulf Coast Barber College has not only changed the lives of Whitney’s students, but it has also transformed her own family’s life. Whitney’s success allowed her to retire her husband from his 9-to-5 job, and now he works alongside her full-time. Together, they’re the epitome of a dynamic powerhouse couple.
Their business has grown to include two locations: the flagship Gulf Coast Barber College in Texas City, TX, and the newly launched Third Coast Barber College in League City, TX. Gulf Coast Barber College is on track to receive its accreditation from the Department of Education, which will unlock even more opportunities for its students.
Why Choose Gulf Coast Barber College?
Whitney’s goal is simple: your goal is her goal. She takes pride in the close-knit, family-oriented environment that she has cultivated at Gulf Coast Barber College. What sets her college apart is its intimate setting, its women-owned leadership, and the genuine family bond created between the students and staff.
Her motto? “Don’t let your reason WHY be the reason why you DON’T!”
Self-Care & Advice for Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs
Whitney believes in the importance of self-care. She advocates for taking time for yourself—whether through vacations, staycations, or mental breaks. She also reminds us that entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s okay to make mistakes, and you should set small finish lines (deadlines) within your journey to help keep you on track.
Most importantly? START WHERE YOU ARE! Whatever your circumstances, just begin.
